Let's be honest... bad posture, stiff necks, burning or shooting pain between shoulder blades, etc. are all great for business if you're a Chiropractor or Licensed Massage Therapist! However, to get the most out of your body and its awe-inspiring healing ability, we need to give our bodies their greatest capacity to heal. Chiropractic care and massage therapy are invaluable tools in the fight against muscle tightness, soreness, chronic pain, headaches, nerve irritation, etc., but we alone cannot "fix" you. Stretching your chronically shortened muscles and correcting poor posture are absolutely KEY to creating better balance within your body. A body out of balance, is an unhappy body.
Remember Sir Issac Newton's Laws of Motion... "To every action there is always an equal and opposite reaction..." This law applies to our bodies as well. If you have a chronically shortened muscle, the opposite muscle will be chronically overstretched. In plain (less boring) English, most people experience some degree of pain (somewhere between mildly annoying to incredible searing pain) between their shoulder blades and spines. It is probably most noticeable after a long day at your desk. What is really happening is that your pectoral muscles have shortened due to a long day slumped over your desk. The opposite muscles, the rhomboids, have to overstretch to accommodate -- this IS your back pain!
This is just one example... of thousands! Since most our of patients don't have the budget or time to get a massage every day, we bring to you the next best thing -- YouTube! Below are links to really helpful videos of how to stretch and achieve better posture. There is plenty of useful knowledge to be gained through these videos. There is a lot of great information on YouTube - if you don't see what you are looking for here, search YouTube. Also, PLEASE REMEMBER if you try some of these stretches and they cause you pain (not discomfort, PAIN)... STOP IMMEDIATELY. Listen to your body -- pain is your body's way of saying, "Hey dummy, quit doing that before we get hurt." Don't ignore it!
Finally, you may be wondering why we would want to share this information with our patients. Its not going to put us out of a job -- it is going to help YOU get the most out of your chiropractic adjustments and massage therapy! A body in balance is a happy body!
