Types of Massage
Swedish massage is the “standard” type of massage offered in most clinics, gyms, spas, and wellness centers; it is virtually synonymous with massage therapy. Swedish massage is based on the Western concepts of anatomy and physiology (Eastern massage is often energy-based). Using lotion or oil, the massage therapist will typically begin with broad general strokes and then transition to specific strokes to address problem areas. Swedish massage provides full-body muscle relaxation, and it is helpful in recovering from an injury. Session lengths can be 30 - 120 minutes.
Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue massage is a focused, therapeutic massage that targets and aims to correct range of motion limitations, spasms, constrictions, adhesions (aka: muscle knots) and other specific problems in the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. This type of massage is particularly beneficial for people with chronic headaches, chronic pain and/or tightness, repetitive strain, postural problems, and/or injuries. While it's true that the pressure of deep tissue is generally more intense than that of a Swedish massage, it doesn’t have to be painful to be effective. Deep tissue itself is not a specific technique. Your therapist will combine many modalities to treat your specific problem(s) in whatever way she finds to be most effective. This may include utilizing trigger point therapy, neuromuscular therapy, myofascial release, cupping, assisted stretching, etc. Session lengths can be 30 - 120 minutes.
We are often asked about “sports” massage. We find “sports” massage requests to be pretty vague. We don’t have a specific sports protocol that we perform. All of our massages are customized to the needs of the individual so, though we don’t offer a specific sports massage, you can be assured that we are well-versed in working with athletes and their specific needs.
The Headache Massage
Do you frequently have headaches? If so, do you experience the sensation that your temples are crushing into your brain? Or, do you suffer from a stabbing pain at the base of your skull? Or, do you have brutal pains above and behind your eyes and/or through the top of your head? Do one (or more) of these sound like your headache? If so, then this is the massage for you! All the headaches described above are tension headaches; research shows that approximately 90% of all tension headaches originate in dysfunctional neck muscles! Don't suffer unnecessarily. This deep tissue work is designed specifically to release and restore function to dysfunctional neck, shoulders and upper back muscles, help with jaw problems (TMJ disorder) and reestablish range of motion to the neck. The headache massage is designed specific to your symptoms and will include self-care suggestions to further enhance the effects of the massage. Read more about tension headaches and The Headache Massage here. Session length is 90 minutes and is upper body only.
Also known as prenatal massage, pregnancy massage is customized to an expectant mother's needs but is most often used to promote relaxation. Since many pregnant women suffer from lower back pain and swollen ankles especially in the later months, prenatal massage is a safe, drug-free way to provide relief. We use a special maternity pillow so that the expectant mother can safely and comfortably lay face-down during her massage. Your therapist will modify certain techniques and avoid specific areas during your pregnancy massage. Session lengths can be 30 - 60 minutes.
Cupping massage is the combination of massage movements and negative pressure with the use of a suction device on the skin. A flexible silicone cup is positioned at the area to be treated and a vacuum is created within the cup to draw the skin and underlying tissue into the cup. The produced vacuum creates a suction effect that increases blood and lymphatic circulation systemically and to the local area, relaxes muscle tissue and support, draws stagnation, pathogenic factors and toxins out of the body and releases a myriad of pain causing factors. The suction can be adjusted so pressure can be light to heavy. We love this massage for old, lingering problems! Cupping works great on back, shoulders, arms, chest, glutes, quads and hamstrings. Session lengths can be 30 minutes (1 – 2 areas), 45 minutes (2 – 3 areas), 60 minutes (2 – 4 areas), 75 minutes (3 – 5 areas) or 90 minutes (4 – 6 areas). Please note - this massage may leave marks on your skin!
Himalayan Hot Salt Stone Massage
Health & Harmony’s Himalayan Hot Salt Stone Massage uses heated salt stones as an extension of your therapist’s hands to deliver a full body massage. The use of the pink salt stones allows the organic trace minerals they contain to permeate the skin and body while delivering deep, penetrating heat to the muscles. A Himalayan Hot Salt Stone Massage integrates the philosophies of Eastern medicine, Swedish massage, thermal therapy and salt therapies to create an array of possible benefits, including:
This unforgettable therapeutic experience is available as a 45 minute (posterior only) 60 minute (full body), 75 minute (extended full-body) massage!
Lymphedema (Manual Lymphatic Drainage) Massage
Your lymphatic system helps eliminate your body’s waste. A healthy, active lymphatic system uses the natural movements of smooth muscle tissue to do this. However, surgeries that affect or remove the lymph nodes (mostly commonly due to breast cancer) or other damage in the body (such as an injury, congestive heart failure or blood clots) can cause fluids to build up in the lymph system and nodes. This causes a condition known as lymphedema. A doctor may recommend receiving lymphatic massage to move the waste fluids away from the damaged area. Because lymphedema is a chronic condition that cannot be cured, helping patients prevent the onset of lymphedema is a real benefit. Prevention can be particularly effective for women whom have undergone surgery for the treatment of breast cancer. Please note, we may need medical clearance and/or permission from your physician before you receive this type of massage.
Lymphatic massage is a gentle pressure technique and should only be performed by a Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLT). Akala Wilson is both an LMT and CLT. A lymphatic drainage massage will last 60 minutes.
We have a gorgeous couples massage room featuring a hand-carved Italian marble fireplace and a lion's head fountain! All massage modalities are available also for couples massage (they don't have to be the same for each person). Our couples massage will conclude with a blooming tea service! Perfect for date night, birthdays, celebrations, etc.! Session lengths can be 60 - 90 minutes.
Moist Heat Therapy
Moist heat increases circulation and speeds recovery by bringing in fresh blood cells and taking away the wastes that hinder healing. The moisture produced by the heating pad transfers the high heat deeper into tissues than an ordinary dry heat pad. These beneficial results continue for several hours after treatment. Moist heat therapy is included with all massages (however, it may not be used during a cupping or a hot stone massage).
Take your massage to the next level by having your therapist add essential oils to the massage lotion! Aromatherapy can be defined as the art and science of utilizing naturally extracted aromatic essences from plants to balance, harmonize and promote the health of body, mind and spirit. We use Harmony Naturals (our own house line!) of 100% pure essential oils and blends, as well as our own handmade pain-relieving creams in our massages. Aromatherapy may be added to any massage at the no additional charge.
All Massage Therapists at Health & Harmony are Michigan-licensed and insured. A Licensed Massage Therapist holds a healthcare license with the state, which means she has met all of the educational requirements, passed national boards and has a clean personal history (verified via an FBI background check). It may seem funny to state this, but there are an alarming number of establishments operating in the greater Lansing area that have untrained and/or unlicensed personnel falsely portraying themselves as massage therapists. Health & Harmony’s LMT’s licenses can be verified by visiting the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs / Bureau of Professional Licensing.
