Harmony Naturals

Two best friends. One big dream. A lot of essential oils.

Harmony Naturals didn't start in a lab or a boardroom. It started in Kim's brain — somewhere around 2 AM on one of those nights when sleep just wasn't happening.

Kim first learned about essential oils in massage therapy school back in 2006. She thought they were cool, started incorporating them into her massage practice, and eventually tried making products to sell. It didn't go well. She didn't really know what she was doing yet, and she knew it. But the idea never went away. It just marinated — for about a decade.

Meanwhile, in Iowa, Kim's best friend Lindsay was discovering essential oils on her own. Lindsay had been making homemade laundry soap for years to save money, and when she stumbled into essential oils through a bottle of lavender (a gift from a conversation that started, of all places, at a psychic medium), she was hooked. She started researching, experimenting, and making her own products — including a leg lotion that worked so well she named it Magic Potion Lotion. The passion was real.

The two had been friends since 2007, when they worked together at a Mexican-Irish restaurant in Iowa (yes, that's a real thing). Kim was a training server; Lindsay was new. A friendship was formed over a shared love of tacos, and it stuck — through moves, marriages, career changes, and 500 miles of distance.

For years, they'd talk on the phone about essential oils — swapping recipes, sharing ideas, daydreaming about starting a business together someday. But someday stayed someday. Kim was building her massage therapy practice. Lindsay was managing a convenience store and working 65-hour weeks. The dream was real, but the timing never was.

Then, in February 2017, Lindsay called Kim. They talked on the phone nearly every day, so a call wasn't unusual. But this one was different. Lindsay told Kim she was quitting her job, moving to Michigan, and they were going to do this thing — for real. Kim didn't believe her. She didn't believe her for months. She didn't believe her until she saw the U-Haul pull up to her house.

And just like that, Harmony Naturals went from a 2 AM daydream to a real business.

Why We Started This

We were frustrated. The essential oil industry is dominated by multi-level marketing companies that charge inflated prices for products that aren't any better than what you can get elsewhere — and then mislead consumers into believing they are. Terms like "certified pure therapeutic grade" sound impressive, but they're made-up marketing language. There is no governing body that grades, certifies, or regulates essential oil quality. The only honest claim a company can make is "100% pure essential oil." That's what we use. That's all we've ever used.

We started Harmony Naturals because we believed we could deliver high-quality, versatile, handmade essential oil products at a fraction of the inflated cost — without the recruitment parties, the misleading claims, or the layers of commissions that drive up prices. We wanted to make practical, chemical-free, natural products that a regular person can actually afford to use every day.

How We Make It

Everything we sell is produced in-house — in small batches, right here in our lab at Health & Harmony in Lansing. We source our essential oils in bulk from transparent, top-quality wholesalers. We rebottle single-note oils exactly as they come to us. We create our blends personally from those same oils. We formulate our creams, skincare, and body products ourselves, and we determine pricing based on what it actually costs to produce — materials plus time — not on what the market will bear.

There are no middlemen. No distributors. No commissions. No layers of markup between us and you. Just people who love what they make and want you to love it too.

What We Make
